Lighting up Diwali Safely: A 5-Year Look at Diya Burns
North IndiaThu Jan 02 2025
Diwali is celebrated with great enthusiasm by Indians worldwide. Although fireworks often steal the limelight, diyas are also a significant part of the festivities. These traditional oil lamps can cause burns if not handled carefully. A recent study at a major hospital in North India reviewed burn injuries sustained from diyas during Diwali over a five-year period.
The analysis of hospital records showed that nearly a third (32. 5%) of all burn injuries during Diwali were caused by diyas. The most common reason? Diyas left burning on the floor. Surprisingly, women were most affected, making up 70. 4% of these cases. One in every three patients required hospitalization.
This study brings attention to the importance of using diyas safely. Preventing these burns is crucial, especially during a festive time meant for joy, not injury.
