Lilly Partners With Ascidian to Edit RNA for Kidney Disease Drugs

Bengaluru, IndiaWed Jun 03 2026
Lilly has secured exclusive rights to use Ascidian’s RNA exon‑editing platform for new kidney disease treatments. The system can fix faulty genes without permanently changing a patient’s DNA, offering an alternative to traditional CRISPR methods. The deal gives Ascidian up to $1. 9 billion, split between an upfront payment and future sums that depend on development milestones, regulatory approvals and sales. Lilly will take over the later stages of research, production and market launch, while Ascidian stays in charge of early studies and can continue other kidney projects.
Lilly’s move follows a series of recent investments in genetic medicine, including the $1. 13 billion purchase of Verve Therapeutics and collaborations with AI‑driven biotech firms. The partnership aims to cut the burden of inherited kidney disorders by combining Ascidian’s technology with Lilly’s expertise in drug development. Ascidian’s chief business officer highlighted that their RNA‑based approach shares benefits with CRISPR but avoids permanent DNA edits. The goal is to create safer, more precise therapies for patients with kidney disease.
