Listen Up: Google's New Audio Search Feature
USASat Jun 14 2025
Google has introduced a new way to get information. It is a test feature that adds AI-generated audio discussions to search results. This feature is called Audio Overviews. It is currently available on mobile devices. Users can enable it in Labs. This feature allows users to generate a podcast-style discussion for certain search queries. For example, if someone searches for "How do noise cancellation headphones work? " they will see a button under the "People also ask" module. This button says "Generate Audio Overview. " When the button is clicked, it takes up to 40 seconds to create the audio overview.
The audio overview appears in a small player within the search results. Users can play, pause, mute, and adjust the playback speed. The audio overview features two AI-generated hosts. They discuss the topic in an enthusiastic manner. Below the playback bar, there are links to the sources used in the audio overview.
This feature is only available in English in the US. Google has been expanding the use of Audio Overviews since it launched last year. It can now generate audio discussions based on notes, deep research from Gemini, and files in Google Docs. This feature is part of Google's effort to make information more accessible. It is also a way to engage users who prefer listening to reading. However, it raises questions about the reliability of AI-generated content. Users should always verify the information they find online. This feature is a step towards a more interactive and engaging search experience. It is important to remember that AI is not perfect. Users should always think critically about the information they consume.
