Live Longer Despite Genes: Healthy Lifestyle Can Reduce Risk by 62%

You might think your genes decide how long you live, but a new study says that’s not entirely true. By leading a healthy lifestyle, you can actually reduce the risk of early death by about 62%. This finding comes from research published in BMJ Evidence Based Medicine. The study used data from over 350,000 people with European ancestry, tracking their lifestyles and genetics for an average of 13 years.
What makes this study interesting is that it didn’t just look at one aspect of lifestyle but combined several factors like not smoking, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and eating healthily. When these were followed, the risk of dying early was significantly lowered, even for those with genetic risks.
The key takeaway? Even if you have a genetic predisposition to a shorter lifespan, adopting healthy habits can extend your life by up to 5. 5 years! That’s no small feat. While the study can't prove these behaviors directly cause longevity, it shows a strong link.
So what should you do? Quit smoking if you haven’t already. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week and include strength training twice a week. Make sure you get seven to eight hours of sleep every night. Lastly, follow a diet similar to the Mediterranean one—lots of plants, whole grains, beans, seeds, and olive oil with red meat in moderation.
It’s not just about living longer; it's about living better. If you struggle with any of these changes, remember there are plenty of resources available: phone helplines for quitting smoking, support groups for alcohol reduction, and guidelines to help you build a sustainable exercise routine. Start small and build from there—every effort counts!
