As the 9/11 anniversary arrived, presidential rivals Joe Biden, Donald Trump, and Kamala Harris put aside their differences to stand together at ground zero. But as the reading of victims' names began, some families couldn't help but challenge the politicians to take action.
'We are pleading for your help, but you ignore us,' said Allison Walsh-DiMarzio, a daughter of a 9/11 victim. 'Which one of you will have the courage to be our hero? '
As the nation marked this solemn occasion, it's clear that the wounds of 9/11 are still raw. But amidst the tragedy, can we find a glimmer of hope for change? Would it be possible to reconcile the past with the present, and find a way to move forward together?
Some argue that the political theater at 9/11 memorials is more about scoring points than paying respects. 'This should not be a place to score political points to get brownie points to round up your base,' said Brandon Jones, a cousin of a 9/11 victim. But can we really afford to be cynical? Is it too much to ask for leaders to put aside their differences and work towards a common goal?
As we remember the 2,977 lives lost on that fateful day, we must also confront the aftermath. The wars, the upheaval, the loss. But perhaps, just perhaps, this day can be a turning point. A chance for us to rekindle the spirit of unity, to recognize the humanity that binds us all.
So what if we chose to focus on the positives? The resilience, the hope, the love? Would that be too much to ask for on this hallowed ground?
In 2012, the National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum decided to limit the ceremony to relatives reading victims' names, citing the need for solemnity. The event has become a rare moment of bipartisanship, with politicians from both sides coming together to pay their respects. While some families argue that politicians should focus on holding those responsible for 9/11 accountable, others see the event as an opportunity for leaders to come together and work towards a common goal. The anniversary serves as a reminder of the ongoing impact of 9/11, with many families still seeking justice and closure.
