A Big Swap Before IPL 2027: What This Pant-Kuldeep Trade Really Means
IndiaWed Jun 24 2026
Two star Indian cricketers are heading back to teams where they first made their names. Rishabh Pant is returning to Delhi Capitals, the franchise that shaped his early career, after a forgettable two-year stint with Lucknow Super Giants. The move follows a straight swap with Kuldeep Yadav, who is now heading to Lucknow in exchange for Pant. Delhi Capitals paid ₹15 crore for Pant, while Lucknow Super Giants spent ₹13. 5 crore to bring in Kuldeep. Both players now get a fresh start in familiar or new environments.
Pant’s move back home isn’t just a reunion—it’s a chance to rebuild. He was once Delhi’s most explosive batter and captain, leading the team in 43 matches and playing 111 games for them overall, more than any other player in the franchise’s history. But after two tough seasons in Lucknow, where he managed just 269 and 312 runs in the last two IPLs, questions linger about whether he can regain his peak form. His captaincy there didn’t go well either, with the team ending seventh and then tenth in the table.
Kuldeep, on the other hand, is trading one familiar team for another. He had a strong run with Delhi Capitals from 2022 to 2024, taking 72 wickets in 65 games. But in 2026, his performance dropped sharply—just 10 wickets at an economy rate of 10. 30, the worst of his IPL career. Now, Lucknow is betting on a change of scenery to help him bounce back. Spin bowling can make or break a team, especially in the IPL, so this deal could be a smart pick-up—or another risk.
The timing of this swap isn’t random. It happened right after the 2026 season ended, giving both teams time to adjust before 2027. For Delhi, it’s about getting a player back who knows the system well. For Lucknow, it’s about adding depth to a bowling unit that struggled last time. But neither player is a sure bet anymore. Both have shown flashes of brilliance but also long slumps. Will a new beginning help, or are they trading one set of problems for another?
