On December 27, plane spotters at LAX observed a worrisome moment. A Delta Air Lines flight, headed to Atlanta, nearly collided with a chartered jet carrying the Gonzaga University basketball team. The Delta flight, operating on an Airbus A321, departed five minutes late and arrived in Atlanta about four hours later.
The near-miss involved Key Lime Air's Embraer E135 jet, which had just landed from Spokane. Air traffic controllers instructed the charter flight to hold its position to avoid crossing the runway as the Delta flight was taking off. However, the charter jet rolled past the holding point, prompting air traffic controllers to repeat "stop, stop, stop. "
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation. Key Lime Air's Senior Vice President, Jon Coleman, assured that safety is their top priority and they are working with the FAA to determine the facts. Delta Air Lines stated they were unaware of any reports to the FAA about the incident.
It's important to note that while the investigation is ongoing, it's unwise to blame anyone just yet. This incident follows a series of close calls at U. S. airports this year. Recently, two United Airlines flights in Chicago had to perform 'go-arounds' due to other aircraft on the runway.
