A closer look at Israel's latest West Bank housing plans

West Bank, Jerusalem, IsraelThu Jun 04 2026
Israel’s government just approved plans to build over 2, 000 new homes in three West Bank settlements. These areas are under Israeli control but claimed by Palestinians for a future state. Most countries see these settlements as against international law, making peace talks harder. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who oversees parts of the West Bank’s administration, announced the move. The new housing includes 1, 000+ units near Jerusalem, nearly 1, 000 near Nablus, and over 200 near Hebron. Smotrich called it a step toward "strengthening Israel’s hold" on the land, even though three other countries have sanctioned him for his hardline views. He insists the sanctions won’t change anything.
Since taking office three years ago, Smotrich has pushed to expand Jewish settlements and reject the idea of a Palestinian state. His government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has already allowed more settlements and even created new ones. Meanwhile, Palestinians see the West Bank as part of their future independent country, with over 3 million living there alongside around 500, 000 Israelis. Not everyone supports these plans. The U. S. under Trump was less critical of settlements but still opposed annexation. The UAE, one of Israel’s few Arab allies, has also warned against further expansion. Palestinian leaders called the announcement "provocative" and accused Israel of fueling more conflict. Smotrich’s recent threats to dismantle the Palestinian Authority—after rumors of an ICC arrest warrant—show just how tense things are. While the ICC hasn’t confirmed those claims, Smotrich’s hardline stance keeps pushing Israel’s policies further away from peace talks.
