A Cruise Ship Outbreak: What We Know About Hantavirus
New Mexico, Albuquerque, USAMon May 04 2026
The cruise ship that once promised adventure now faces a frightening health crisis. A virus called hantavirus is believed to be the culprit behind three deaths and several illnesses on board.
Hantaviruses have a long history, with records of outbreaks in Asia and Europe that caused severe fever and kidney problems. In the 1990s, new strains appeared in the American Southwest, leading to a lung‑related disease known as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.
The World Health Organization is still examining the situation, conducting lab tests and tracking how the virus may have spread. Scientists are also sequencing the virus to learn more about its origin and behavior.
People usually catch hantavirus when they come into contact with rodents or their droppings, urine, or saliva. The risk rises when these materials are disturbed and become airborne—especially in poorly ventilated spaces like cabins or storage rooms.
Although rare, the virus can jump from person to person. In the United States, most cases are reported in western states such as New Mexico and Arizona, where rural living increases the chance of mouse encounters.
Symptoms start with flu‑like signs: fever, chills, muscle aches and sometimes a headache. Within one to eight weeks after exposure, the disease can develop into severe lung trouble with fluid buildup in the chest. A different form of hantavirus causes a fever and kidney failure within a week or two after contact.
The fatality rate varies: nearly 40% of those with lung syndrome die, while the kidney‑related form has a death rate between 1% and 15%.
There is no specific cure, but early medical care improves survival chances. Researchers still question why some people experience mild illness while others suffer severe outcomes, and they are studying long‑term patient data for clues.
Preventing infection involves staying away from rodents, using gloves and bleach to clean droppings, and avoiding sweeping or vacuuming that can stir the virus into the air.
