A Father and Daughter's Final Flight for Jamaica

A father and his daughter lost their lives in a plane crash while delivering aid to Jamaica. Alexander Wurm, a 53-year-old church leader, and his 22-year-old daughter, Serena, were on a mission to help those affected by Hurricane Melissa. Their plane, a Beechcraft King Air, crashed shortly after taking off from Fort Lauderdale's executive airport. The plane narrowly missed houses before crashing into a lake, but no one on the ground was hurt. Wurm was the founder of a Christian ministry called Ignite the Fire. This group focuses on helping young people in the Caribbean. He had been making several trips to Jamaica to bring much-needed supplies after the hurricane. The storm, a category 5, had caused severe damage when it hit on October 28th. Sean Malone, who works with an aid agency called Crisis Relief International, shared his shock and sadness. He praised Wurm's quick response to the hurricane, saying he did everything he could to help. Malone highlighted Wurm's bravery and dedication, noting that he gave his life to help others. Ferrin Cole, a team leader in Jamaica, spoke about Wurm's repeated efforts to bring supplies. He mentioned that Wurm delivered medical supplies, water filters, and even screws for roofs. Cole emphasized that Wurm's main goal was to spread the message of Jesus through his help. Serena Wurm was also praised for her commitment to humanitarian work. She was described as a beacon of hope, following in her father's footsteps. The family is left with Wurm's wife, Candace, and two other children, James, 17, and Christiana, 20. The recovery efforts continued after the crash, with crews working overnight to find and retrieve the plane's wreckage. The plane, a 1976 King Air, had been traveling regularly between the Cayman Islands and Jamaica. The bodies of the victims have not yet been recovered, and investigators will look into the cause of the crash.
