A Hospital Hit in Sudan: A Tragic Toll
SudanSun Mar 22 2026
In the western part of Sudan’s Darfur region, a recent attack on a teaching hospital resulted in at least 64 deaths, including more than a dozen children, according to the World Health Organization. The strike also wounded around 89 people and left the facility unable to operate, officials noted on a public platform.
The conflict that has engulfed Sudan began in April 2023 when a clash between the army and the Rapid Support Forces escalated into widespread fighting. The paramilitary group has accused the military of striking the hospital, while army representatives claim the target was a nearby police station. They spoke only anonymously because they cannot discuss the incident publicly.
This battle has already taken over 40, 000 lives, but humanitarian agencies warn that the real figure is likely much higher. Since hostilities started, more than 2, 000 people have died in attacks on health centers, a statistic that highlights the danger to medical workers and patients.
The head of the WHO has called for an immediate reduction in violence, urging all sides to ease tensions. He emphasized that the suffering caused by the war is far too great and that peace must be pursued urgently.
The situation remains volatile, with civilians caught in the crossfire and essential services disrupted across the country.
