In a surprising turn of events, a U. S. judge has put a temporary halt to the Trump administration's plan to detain Imran Ahmed, a British activist fighting against online misinformation. Ahmed, who lives in New York, is the CEO of the Center for Countering Digital Hate. The U. S. government accused him and four other Europeans of trying to censor free speech and unfairly target big tech companies with strict regulations.
This decision came after Ahmed filed a lawsuit, arguing that the threat of deportation violated his rights to free speech and due process. The judge's order means Ahmed can't be arrested, detained, or deported until his case is heard. A meeting between both sides is scheduled for December 29.
Ahmed's work focuses on making the internet safer by highlighting false information and pushing tech giants to tackle illegal content, like hate speech and harmful material targeting children. European governments support these efforts, saying they make the internet a safer place.
The U. S. government, however, sees things differently. Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed that Ahmed's presence in the U. S. could have serious negative effects on foreign policy. Ahmed, though, is determined to continue his work, saying he won't be intimidated into leaving.
The U. S. State Department responded by saying the country isn't obligated to let foreigners enter or stay. Meanwhile, another case involving Mahmoud Khalil, a green card holder detained over his involvement in protests, shows that the Trump administration has tried to deport at least one permanent resident this year.
