A late start for the 2027 school year in Anne Arundel

Next year’s school schedule in Anne Arundel County takes a different path. Instead of kicking off in late August, classes begin on August 30, 2027. The change came after the school board voted unanimously on a fresh calendar. Officials say the delay helps avoid losing teaching days to holidays that land on weekends. For example, Rosh Hashana and Eid al-Fitr will fall on Saturdays and Sundays, so schools won’t close extra days for them.Breaks look a bit longer this time. Thanksgiving break lasts five days, winter break stretches to six days, and spring break also runs six days. Students won’t see many early releases except for four “unity days” each quarter. On those days, schools close early so kids can wear orange and focus on standing up to bullying. The new plan still keeps a full school year, ending on June 14, 2028. But the late start might shift summer plans for families. Some wonder if an extra week of vacation in August will help students ease into learning or just make summer feel shorter once it ends.
