In a surprising turn of events, Oklahoma's governor made a big decision. He chose to change a death sentence to life in prison. This happened after a state panel suggested it. The man, Tremane Wood, was supposed to be executed. But now, he will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Wood has always said he didn't kill anyone. He told the board, \"I’m not a killer. \" His brother, who is already dead, admitted to the murder. The governor said this decision makes sure a violent person stays off the streets forever.
This is only the second time the governor has shown mercy like this. The first time was years ago. Wood's lawyers are happy with the decision. They say it honors the family of the victim and brings some peace.
But not everyone agrees. Some say Wood is still dangerous. They point to his actions in prison. He has been involved in gang activities and other crimes. The attorney general says Wood has hurt others even in prison.
Wood admits he did wrong. He regrets his part in the robbery. But he keeps saying he didn't kill the young man. His execution was one of three planned this week in the U. S. So far this year, 41 people have been executed. More are scheduled for next year.
