A lifelong educator ends his career at a small Lutheran school

Rochelle, Illinois, USASat May 30 2026
For four decades, one man dedicated his career to teaching in Lutheran schools across Illinois. After starting as a physical education teacher in 1986, he spent nine years as principal of St. Paul Lutheran School in Rochelle before retiring. His journey included roles as a principal, athletic director, and teacher at multiple Lutheran schools, including stints at Rockford Lutheran. Along the way, he became deeply connected to Lutheran education, even teaching his own children there. What kept him going wasn’t just the job title—it was the impact on students. Small private schools like St. Paul rely on one person handling many roles, from teaching to administration. He praised the supportive staff and families who made the workload manageable. Success wasn’t about one person but the combined effort of teachers, parents, and congregation members working together. He emphasized that any achievements belonged to the whole community, not just him.
His emotional moments came from goodbyes with students at the end of the school year. Now, he plans to relax with family, fish, and golf, while staying active in his church and community. He’ll even work part-time at Rockford Lutheran. His biggest pride? Seeing students thrive academically and athletically while keeping faith at the school’s core. Religion and education went hand in hand for him. He believed faith helped students grow in all areas of life. He never saw Lutheran education as exclusive but rather a place that accepted everyone. His approach was simple: meet students where they were, educationally and spiritually. Two things motivated him every year: loving kids and sharing faith. His final message was about leading with heart and caring genuinely. Small communities can have a big impact, and his school proved that. Though retiring, he’ll stay connected, leaving behind a legacy of dedication.
