A Look at Reform Judaism After a Recent Synagogue Attack

West Bloomfield, MI, USAFri Mar 13 2026
Reform Judaism is the biggest Jewish movement in North America, known for its focus on social justice and equality. One of its largest congregations, Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, was hit by a violent attack last week. The temple, founded in 1941 and now home to about 12, 000 members, hosts a wide range of religious, educational, and social programs. The Reform movement values tradition while encouraging reason and personal conscience. Its leaders often champion civil rights, gender equality, and LGBTQ+ inclusion. Women can become rabbis in Reform circles, and interfaith marriages are permitted—options that differ from more traditional Jewish practices. Although many Reform Jews keep certain customs like keeping kosher or wearing a kippah, they generally adapt rituals to modern contexts.
Reform Judaism began in the 19th‑century German and American Jewish communities. Its founders moved away from strict literal readings of the Hebrew Bible, instead promoting modern scholarship and rational thought. Despite these shifts, many congregations still celebrate Hebrew worship and maintain a connection to Israel, supporting the state while also critiquing specific political actions. The Union for Reform Judaism is the main body that unites over 850 congregations across the United States and Canada, with a global membership of around two million. It provides support for rabbis, cantors, and policy advocacy. The recent attack on Temple Israel follows other incidents in Toronto and Jackson, Mississippi, highlighting a troubling rise in antisemitic violence. In response, the Union released a statement affirming solidarity with the injured security officer and all affected. It emphasized that synagogues are sanctuaries meant for prayer, learning, and community, condemning violence and antisemitism. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to building communities grounded in dignity, justice, and peace.
