A man from Ecuador, Juan Tobay Robles, was finally let go by U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This happened after a judge in Minnesota said he should be freed. If ICE didn't let him go, their acting director, Todd Lyons, would have had to go to court and explain why they didn't follow the judge's orders.
This is not the first time ICE has been told to follow court orders. The judge, Patrick J. Schiltz, was not happy. He said ICE sent many agents to Minnesota but didn't plan for the legal problems that would come up. The judge could still cancel the hearing, but it's a big deal. ICE and the Department of Homeland Security are already dealing with lawsuits and bad news after two people were killed by ICE agents in Minnesota.
Why were so many agents sent to Minnesota? The Trump administration said it was to enforce immigration laws and stop fraud. But Minnesota's leaders, who are Democrats, think it's because Trump doesn't like their politics. They say he's trying to cause trouble for Governor Tim Walz.
Trump and Walz talked on the phone about calming things down. But the problems are not over. The state's attorney general is suing to stop ICE's actions. They say ICE agents are doing things they shouldn't, like stopping and arresting people for no good reason. The Trump administration says what they're doing is legal. But a judge hasn't decided yet.
