A New Chance for Stalled Research Grants

The Trump administration has decided to take another look at research grants that were put on hold or rejected. This comes after a legal fight with scientists and states led by Democrats. A court in Boston had earlier said that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) wrongly stopped funding for research linked to diversity and inclusion.
The Supreme Court stepped in and paused part of this decision. They said that money-related fights should go to a special court. But the part about future grants was left open.
Now, the government has agreed to review grants that were frozen or denied. This doesn't mean they will fund any of them, just that they will look at them again. The researchers involved say these grants could help with important health issues like HIV, Alzheimer's, and LGBTQ health.
One researcher, Nikki Maphis, said this agreement lets her and others move forward after a long freeze. But the NIH still disagrees. They say they stopped funding because they thought the research was more about ideology than science.
The court's earlier decision to block the NIH's policy is still in place. The government has appealed this decision.
