In a move to calm tensions, Cambodia and Thailand's foreign ministers met with China's foreign minister in a province near the disputed border. This meeting happened just two days after both countries signed a new ceasefire agreement. The fighting had been going on for weeks, killing over 100 people and forcing many to leave their homes.
The meeting took place in Yunnan, China, which is close to the border and Southeast Asia. This location was chosen instead of Beijing, showing China's growing role in regional diplomacy. China has been working to increase its influence in Asian crises and global diplomacy.
During the meeting, China's foreign minister urged both countries to work together for peace and stability. He said that no one wants to see the fighting start again. The Cambodian foreign minister agreed, hoping the ceasefire would last and prevent future conflicts.
Both countries also agreed to take steps to restore their relationship. They plan to combat transnational crimes and improve communication. China offered humanitarian aid to those affected by the conflict.
The dispute between Cambodia and Thailand has been ongoing. A previous ceasefire was brokered by Malaysia and the U. S. in July, but tensions continued. The latest agreement includes the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers held by Thailand and a commitment to avoid using landmines.
Cambodia's prime minister also addressed the situation, acknowledging that while they could continue fighting, it would not benefit the country in the long run. This statement reflects a shift towards peace and stability.
