A New Giant Dome Coming to Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is building a huge entertainment dome on Yas Island that will cost $1. 7 billion. The structure will be a mix of concert hall, cinema and digital art space. It follows the same idea that first appeared in Las Vegas but will be the second of its kind. The dome will let visitors feel surrounded by 360‑degree screens and sound. It can hold up to 20, 000 people and will host concerts, sports shows and brand events. The project is a partnership between Sphere Entertainment and the local tourism department. Why Abu Dhabi? The city wants to grow its economy beyond oil. Yas Island already has big attractions like Formula 1 and theme parks. Adding the dome will bring more tourists, artists and investors to the area. Sphere Entertainment is changing its plan. Instead of building every venue itself, it lets partners fund construction and pays for technology and content.Abu Dhabi is a good fit because it has strong infrastructure and global connections. The first dome in Las Vegas opened last year. It earned $386 million in the first quarter of 2026, up 38 % from a year earlier. The biggest draw is the “Wizard of Oz” show, which sold millions of tickets. However, building the Las Vegas dome cost about $2. 3 billion and it still loses money each year. Despite this, people keep coming to see shows and corporate events on the LED walls. Sphere plans more domes worldwide. They want a second U. S. location near Washington, D. C. , and are talking to many other cities. A smaller version could bring the experience to more places at lower cost. The Abu Dhabi dome shows that large, immersive entertainment can be built outside of Las Vegas. It tests whether the model can work in other markets and make a profit over time.
