Police in Tucson carried out a big operation last Friday night after the 84‑year‑old Nancy Guthrie vanished from her home on February 1. The sheriff’s office said a man was stopped near a Culver’s parking lot, handcuffed and later released. He had been involved in a traffic stop that was linked to a federal search warrant served at a nearby house.
The same night, the FBI and local SWAT teams entered that house. They detained at least three people but no one was charged or kept in custody. The sheriff confirmed that the detainees were only questioned and then let go, a routine procedure while investigators clear a scene.
A gray Range Rover was found parked close to the house. Officers searched the vehicle, took photos and then towed it away for evidence collection. The car’s owner is believed to be a “person of interest, ” but he has since been released and no formal accusations have been made.
Sheriff Chris Nanos said the investigation is still active. He warned that police activity will continue in the area as new leads are followed. “Some leads may grow into warrants, some won’t, ” he explained. The search is part of a larger effort that includes DNA testing and cellphone data analysis.
Retired FBI agent Jason Pack highlighted the role of the bureau’s Cellular Analysis Survey Team. The team can track every phone that pinged nearby towers during the relevant time, mapping movements and potentially linking suspects. However, accessing this data requires court orders, so the process can be slow.
The FBI has increased its reward for information that leads to Nancy’s whereabouts or the arrest of anyone involved. Despite multiple tips and ransom notes, no concrete progress has emerged yet. Authorities are still waiting for lab results from evidence collected at the house and the Range Rover.
The case remains unsolved. Police continue to canvass neighborhoods, process evidence and follow any new information that may emerge. The community is urged to stay alert and report anything that could help find Nancy.
