A plane heading to Tokyo had a rough start on Saturday. Right after taking off from Washington Dulles International Airport, a piece of the engine cover broke off and caught fire. The plane had to turn back quickly, and luckily, everyone on board was safe.
The flight, operated by United Airlines, was a Boeing 777-200ER carrying 275 passengers and 15 crew members. The plane lost power in one engine, which forced it to return to the airport. United Airlines thanked their crew and the airport teams for handling the situation well.
A small brush fire started on the ground from the falling debris, but it was put out quickly. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is looking into what happened.
Meanwhile, a local resident named Anthony Beverley was grilling outside his house when he saw the plane flying low. He noticed the plane banking hard and dumping fuel, which is not something he usually sees. Beverley, an Army veteran, said he lives near a military base, so he's used to seeing military aircraft, but this was different. The plane circled back and headed toward the airport.
United Airlines plans to reschedule the flight to Tokyo with a different plane. Air traffic was briefly disrupted while crews checked the situation.
