A Quiet Corner on Campus for Mental Health Support
Baton Rouge Community College, USATue May 05 2026
Baton Rouge Community College just opened a new mental health hub called The Safe Space. It’s a spot where students can take a break from stress, talk to counselors, or just relax. The college turned an old student life office into this welcoming area, complete with a meditation room and cozy pods for quiet time. Before, mental health services were scattered around campus, making them easy to overlook. Now, they’re in a bright, central spot near the student union, making it simpler for anyone who needs help to find it.
The project got a boost from state health funds, showing how serious Louisiana takes mental wellness. The Safe Space isn’t just for students with diagnosed needs—it’s open to anyone feeling overwhelmed, whether from school, work, or life. Workshops, group chats, and one-on-one sessions are all part of the deal. The college has also added food pantries and clothing closets, proving they’re thinking about students’ overall well-being, not just grades.
Students like Ashanti Watson already appreciate the change. She says the fast pace of life makes it hard to pause, and The Safe Space gives her that chance. The college hopes more people will use it, turning it into a bustling place for support rather than an afterthought.
