A Rare Shot at Gunsmithing School in Arkansas
Black River Technical College, Forrest City, Wynne, USAMon Apr 20 2026
Black River Technical College in Arkansas just joined an exclusive club. It’s one of only four schools in the U. S. that teach short-term gunsmithing courses approved by the National Rifle Association. Most of these programs have been around for decades, but Black River only started in 2020. That’s a quick rise for a field where hands-on training matters more than speed.
A team from three long-running gunsmithing schools visited Black River to check if it met the NRA’s strict standards. They looked at classrooms, tools, and safety rules. After the review, they called the program "excellent" but noted how hard it is to build one from scratch without nearby partners. Black River now offers certificates in riflesmithing, shotgunsmithing, and pistolsmithing, plus an associate degree. Over 125 students have already earned credentials.
Meanwhile, another Arkansas college is searching for a new leader. The University of Arkansas – East Arkansas Community College needs a chancellor after Cathie Cline steps down this summer. Three candidates are in the running, each with deep experience in education and leadership. One ran a rural health academy, another worked in student services, and the third was a first-generation college grad who climbed the academic ladder.
The candidates have different paths but share a focus on growth. The college has been expanding, with student numbers jumping over 11% last year. It’s the fastest growth in the state over five years. The new chancellor will take over a school that’s growing fast but still faces challenges in rural education.
