A Russian Air Force Leader Dies in Crimea Plane Crash
Crimea, RussiaMon Apr 06 2026
A senior officer of Russia’s air force lost his life when a military transport plane went down in Crimea last month. The crash killed 30 people, according to a high‑ranking official who spoke with local media.
The pilot was Alexander Otroshchenko, commander of the 45th Army under the Northern Fleet’s air division. He was on board an An‑26 aircraft that hit a cliff near the coast on March 31. The Defence Ministry said the likely cause was a technical fault.
The An‑26 has flown for more than 50 years. It began service in the late 1960s and is still used by some airlines to move cargo. Unfortunately, this model has been involved in several serious accidents over the past decade.
In 2022, a Ukrainian An‑26 crashed while flying in southeastern Ukraine, killing one passenger. Two years earlier, a training flight in northeastern Ukraine ended with 26 deaths out of 27 people on board. In 2020, the same aircraft type crashed in South Sudan, killing eight, including five Russians. An earlier incident in 2017 saw an An‑26 crash on landing in Ivory Coast, killing four of ten people aboard.
These incidents raise questions about the safety and maintenance of older military aircraft. The Russian defence ministry has promised to investigate the technical failure that caused this latest tragedy.
The loss of a senior commander highlights how dangerous aviation can be, even for experienced crews. It also reminds us that older planes may need more careful upkeep to keep everyone safe.
