Russian President Vladimir Putin had his first say about the U. S. election results last Thursday from Sochi. He congratulated Donald Trump on his triumph and praised the president-elect’s bravery during an attempted assassination back in July. Putin was impressed by Trump's nervy reaction. Putin also gave attention to Trump's ideas about improving relations with Russia. This could be hopeful, as fixing the mess in Ukraine is on everyone's minds. Earlier, the Kremlin had welcomed Trump's say-so about ending the conflict instantly. However, they're still waiting to see if there are real moves.
In a question-and-answer session, Putin sent more praise Trump's way. He speculated that this second term could bring something new. This isn't easy to foresee, though, he admitted. Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, chimed in. He said a meet before the inauguration isn't out of the question. After all, Trump had mentioned he'd call Putin ahead of time. Peskov made it clear that the U. S. isn't seen as a friendly nation. Moscow says Washington’s hand is in the Ukraine conflict. Despite few expectations for warm ties, Peskov thinks the new U. S. leadership could change that tide.
