A Conservative lawmaker, Lord Wolfson, finds himself in hot water. He's a shadow attorney general and a lawyer for Roman Abramovich, a Russian billionaire under UK sanctions. Labour isn't happy about this setup. They say it's a conflict of interest. Justice Minister Jake Richards even called it "indefensible. " Lord Wolfson is part of Abramovich's legal team. They're fighting a court battle in Jersey. The UK government sanctioned Abramovich in March 2022. This was after Russia invaded Ukraine. The oligarch made his fortune in oil and gas. He's accused of having strong ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Abramovich denies this. More than £5. 3bn of Abramovich's assets are frozen in Jersey. This is since he was sanctioned. In April 2022, Jersey started an investigation. They want to know where Abramovich's money comes from. This sparked a long legal battle. Richards says this case is delaying the transfer of funds. Abramovich sold Chelsea FC. The UK government wants this money to go to Ukrainian war victims. But Abramovich says the £2. 5bn from the sale should help "all victims of the war. " This includes Russians.
Richards raised some questions. He asked if Lord Wolfson helped shape the Conservative's stance on the Chelsea FC funds. He also asked if Wolfson declared his interest or stepped back. Richards said the "cab rank rule" doesn't erase conflicts of interest. This rule says barristers must take cases in their expertise, no matter the client. Richards thinks Wolfson can't advise the Conservative leader on this matter. He's getting paid to represent Abramovich. Richards said Wolfson can't do both. He can't be a lawmaker and a lawyer for Abramovich at the same time. The Conservatives fired back. They called Richards' comments "pure politics. " They said Labour doesn't get how the legal system works. Barristers represent clients, not causes. The Conservatives also accused Labour of hypocrisy. They pointed out that Labour's Attorney General once represented a Sinn Féin leader. The Conservatives said they support Ukraine. They called Labour's claims a new low.
