A man from Indiana is now facing serious charges after a shooting at Kentucky State University. The suspect, Jacob Lee Bard, is 48 years old and lives in Evansville. He is not a student at the university. Police have not shared any details about why he did this.
The shooting happened at the Whitney M. Young Jr. residence hall around 3:10 p. m. on Tuesday. When police arrived, they found the suspect already in custody, thanks to the quick action of the university's police. Two students were hurt in the shooting. Sadly, one did not survive, and the other is in critical condition. The university has not released their names yet.
This is a tough time for everyone at Kentucky State University. The school is reaching out to the families of the victims and offering support. They have also made counseling services available to students who need them. Classes, final exams, and campus activities have been canceled for the rest of the week. Students have the option to go home if they want to.
Governor Andy Beshear said this seems to be an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat. He asked everyone to pray for the families and the students affected by this tragedy. University President Koffi C. Akakpo called it a senseless tragedy and shared his grief as a parent.
It's important to think about how we can prevent these kinds of events. Schools should have good security measures in place. Students should also know how to stay safe and what to do in an emergency. This incident serves as a reminder that violence can happen anywhere, and we need to be prepared.
