A Small School’s Long Journey Ends
Cambridge, Massachusetts, USAFri May 22 2026
A private Quaker school in Cambridge has announced it will shut down after 65 years of teaching kids from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The school opened in 1961 with a mission focused on Quaker values like simplicity, fairness, and responsibility. Instead of just teaching math or reading, the school aimed to shape thoughtful, caring students ready to make the world better.
This year, only 43 students attended— a fraction of what many schools need to survive. The school never explained why enrollment dropped so much, but small private schools often struggle when families move away or choose other options. Even without a clear reason, the decision leaves a gap in Cambridge’s education landscape, where community-focused learning is rare.
Former students, teachers, and families are now reflecting on what the school gave them. Many recall lessons that went beyond textbooks, teaching kindness and justice alongside academics. Yet, the closure isn’t just about numbers; it’s about a way of teaching that couldn’t keep up in today’s crowded education market.
Not every school lasts for decades, and some traditions fade with time. The hard part is letting go of a place that shaped so many lives.
