A Spy Plot in the U. S. : How a Pakistani Businessman Tried to Target American Leaders
Brooklyn, New York, USAThu Mar 05 2026
The story begins with a man named Asif Merchant, who lived in Pakistan and ran several businesses. He was approached by an Iranian Revolutionary Guard officer in late 2022, who offered him a dangerous job. The plan was to hire hit men and use the money to try to kill high‑profile U. S. figures, including President Donald Trump, President Joe Biden and former ambassador Nikki Haley.
Merchant claimed he had no choice. He said his family in Iran was threatened, so he felt forced to comply. He also thought that if the U. S. government caught him, he might be able to cooperate and eventually receive a green card.
The FBI set up a sting operation. The men he paid were actually undercover agents who tracked him down in July 2024, just before an unrelated attempt on Trump’s life. During a search of his hotel room in New York, investigators found a handwritten note with code words for the plot.
When asked by the assistant U. S. attorney, Merchant answered straightforwardly: “Yes, I was hired to kill a politician. ” He admitted that the Revolutionary Guard told him to target Trump, Biden and Haley but never gave a specific name. He also said he had drawn the plan on a napkin and paid $5, 000 to a cousin for the hit men’s “token of appreciation. ”
Merchant tried to hide his movements by studying Trump rally locations and arranging a shooting scenario. He even sent fake reports back to the Iranian contact, hoping to keep his cover. However, he was caught when U. S. immigration agents stopped him at Houston airport in April 2024 and searched his belongings.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that Merchant didn’t seek help from law enforcement because he feared his handler would see him. They also said he failed to mention the pressure that might have forced him into the plot during FBI interviews. Despite his claims, the court noted that he acted under duress but still chose to participate.
The case unfolds against a backdrop of recent tensions with Iran, including the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a strike. The U. S. government has denied any Iranian plot against its officials, but the evidence in this case points to a clear attempt to weaponize foreign threats inside America.
