A Street Name That Needs a New Identity
Clay, NY, USAWed Jun 24 2026
The street that runs past the Amazon warehouse in Clay, New York, has been called Plantation Boulevard for many years. The name reminds people of a time when white landowners owned slaves in the South. That history is not part of Clay’s own past.
County officials and town leaders are working together to change the name. They believe a street should not honor a system that hurt people. The decision was made on Juneteenth, the holiday that marks the end of slavery in the United States. The town removed the signs while it waits for a final vote.
Residents of the street are mixed about the change. Some feel proud that their community will no longer carry a racist title. Others worry it will be hard to update mail and documents. About thirty people signed a petition asking for a new name.
The town will soon ask the public to suggest alternatives. A survey link will appear on the website, and a town board meeting will decide the final choice. The vote is expected no earlier than August.
Some board members disagree on how to handle the signs. One said it was a mistake to take them down before a new name was chosen. The town supervisor race in November will also bring more debate.
The move follows a national trend. Cities like Fayetteville, Arkansas, and states such as Rhode Island have already changed street names or state titles that referenced plantations. The effort shows how communities can reshape public spaces to reflect modern values.
