A Sudden Storm in Austin: A Shooting Unfolds
Austin, TX, USATue Mar 03 2026
In the early hours of Sunday, a single man named Ndiaga Diagne sparked a deadly incident on West Sixth Street in Austin. The event claimed three lives, including the shooter himself, and left fourteen others wounded.
Diagne’s background traces back to Senegal. He entered the United States in 2000 on a tourist visa, gained permanent residency after marrying an American citizen in 2006, and became a U. S. citizen in 2013. A minor traffic collision in Texas in 2022 led to his arrest, though the details remain sparse and no other criminal record surfaces.
Investigators are still trying to untangle why Diagne acted. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is probing the possibility of extremist motives, citing items found on his person and in his vehicle. Clues such as clothing bearing the phrase “Property of Allah” and an Iranian flag image hint at a potential link to recent U. S. -Israeli airstrikes on Iran, but officials caution that conclusions are premature.
The attack began near 2 a. m. outside Buford’s bar on Sixth Street. Diagne first circled the block in a large SUV, then parked and fired from inside the car at the bar’s patio and sidewalk. He continued along Sixth Street, later disembarking with an assault rifle and shooting pedestrians as he walked. Police, already on the scene, engaged him soon after, ending the confrontation with Diagne’s death.
The shooting took place just a day after U. S. -Israeli military actions against Iran, raising questions about any influence from overseas events. Governor Abbott has publicly warned that any attempt to exploit the Middle East conflict for domestic threats will face severe repercussions, and has increased state security measures.
Authorities conducted a search at a Pflugerville residence linked to Diagne’s relatives. No public details have emerged about what was seized, and local residents reported no prior disturbances at the property. The investigation remains active: detectives are reviewing video footage, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing evidence from the scene, Diagne’s vehicle, and the Pflugerville location.
Senegal lies on West Africa’s western tip, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and neighboring countries such as Mauritania, Mali, and Guinea.
