Luigi Mangione found himself in the spotlight again, this time in Manhattan Criminal Court. The surprise on his face was clear when he saw the crowd outside the Pennsylvania courtroom during his arraignment for the alleged killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. This was back in December 2024, and the scene was quite something.
The courtroom drama continued on Tuesday, day six of the hearings. Altoona Police Officer Stephen Fox took the stand, sharing that Mangione was taken aback by the number of people gathered. According to Fox, Mangione muttered, \"All these people are here for a mass murder, wild, \" as he left the courtroom.
Mangione's journey to the courtroom began at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania. On December 9, 2024, an employee recognized him and alerted the police. This led to his arrest, and now he's facing a slew of state and federal charges.
Last week, prosecutors dropped a bombshell by releasing the 911 call that led to Mangione's arrest. The McDonald's manager's voice was clear, \"I'm a manager at Plank Road McDonald's out here on the boulevard. And I have a customer here, that some other customers were suspicious of, that he looks like the CEO shooter from New York. \"
Fox's testimony was compelling. He shared that he was confident Mangione was the suspect when the latter smiled at him. On Monday, Altoona Police Officer Christy Wasser testified about finding a magazine with bullets hidden in Mangione's wet underwear inside his backpack.
The defense isn't backing down. Mangione's lawyers argue that their client's Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights were violated. They claim that the warrantless search of Mangione's bag after his arrest was illegal. Prosecutors, however, maintain that the search was legal and that the only non-Mirandized statement Mangione gave was a fake name.
