A Teacher Making Real-World Learning Fun and Impactful
Longmont’s Flagstaff Academy, Longmont, USAWed Jun 17 2026
In Longmont, Colorado, a local teacher just got a big national honor. She was awarded for bringing science to life in a way that’s not just boring textbooks and worksheets.
Students in her class don’t just read about nature—they dig in, literally. One of her biggest projects was turning a patch of land into a fully functional Outdoor Classroom. It wasn’t built just for her—kids helped design it, giving them ownership of their learning space.
She also knows learning isn’t confined to the classroom. She organizes school-wide projects where students clean up parks, plant trees, or track local wildlife. And she didn’t stop at the school gates either. One cool idea involved teaming up with schools in Mexico to study butterflies together. Students wrote letters to their peers across the border, sharing findings and learning about different environments.
All this work wasn’t just noticed—it was recognized with a Presidential award. The White House gave her the prize for teaching kids in ways that stick. Instead of memorizing facts, she helps them understand how the world works by getting their hands dirty.
It’s a reminder that the best lessons come from real experiences, not just sitting and listening.
