A man with a troubled past and no legal right to be in the U. S. is accused of a shocking act of violence. Hernando Garcia-Morales, a 40-year-old from Mexico, allegedly threw a rock at a school bus on January 7. The rock hit an 8-year-old girl, causing serious injuries. She suffered a deep cut on her forehead and a fracture in her skull.
Garcia-Morales was found two days later in a homeless camp. He told police he thought the bus was his enemy. This is not the first time he has been in trouble. He has a long criminal record in New Jersey, dating back to 2006. Despite multiple arrests, he was never deported because of the state's sanctuary policies.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says Garcia-Morales should never have been in the country. They point to his history of violence and mental health issues. He is also a suspect in other rock-throwing incidents and peeping cases. Yet, he was only given a short jail sentence and a fine for his latest crimes.
The young girl is now recovering at home. Her family hopes justice will be served. Garcia-Morales faces serious charges, including aggravated assault. His lawyer says he has mental health issues. The judge ruled he must stay in jail until his case is resolved.
This incident raises questions about immigration policies and how they affect public safety. It also highlights the need for better mental health support for those in need.
