A Young Crypto Scam That Sparked a Luxury Lifestyle

USA, Newport BeachSun Apr 26 2026
Evan Tangeman, 22, from Newport Beach, got 70 months in prison for helping move more than $263 million in crypto. He admitted to laundering at least $3. 5 million for a group that used online games as a front. The gang pulled the money by hacking databases, calling targets and breaking into homes to steal wallet keys. With the stolen cash, they bought club tickets, a black 2022 Rolls‑Royce Ghost, a Lamborghini Urus, private jets and fancy houses in Los Angeles, Miami and the Hamptons.
Their spending was so huge it felt like a cartoon. When his partners were caught, Evan tried to erase evidence, showing he knew he was guilty. The judge gave him three years of supervised release after the prison term. Most conspirators were under 20 and had no jobs. The case involved the U. S. Attorney’s Office, the FBI and the IRS Criminal Investigation unit.
