Jacquelyn Teel had a surprising message for her sons last Wednesday. She texted them during school, "Guess what? We're going to the World Series! "
Calvin Young, Jacquelyn's 15-year-old son from Bergenfield, New Jersey, is battling pediatric cancer. In a turn of events, the Yankees offered front row tickets to the family after a fan incident. The original seat owners were banned for snatching a ball from Mookie Betts' glove during Game 4.
The family's special night out happened just hours before the game started. For Calvin, who's been going through treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering, it was a dream come true. "Just seeing those home runs early on was awesome, " he said, despite the Yankees' close loss.
Calvin was initially invited to a "Kids Only" press conference in September with other young cancer patients. Unfortunately, he got sick and missed it. The World Series invite was a pleasant surprise. "We haven't done something all together like this since Calvin's diagnosis, " Jacquelyn said.
The family set up a GoFundMe to help with Calvin's treatment costs. They've had positive test results lately, which is encouraging.
