Affordable Heat Solutions for Maryland Homes

Maryland, USAFri Mar 20 2026
In the last winter, Maryland’s residents faced unusually cold temperatures while their electricity bills climbed. The state’s utility company is set to raise rates three more times in the next months, which will hit low‑income families hard. Many homes in the Mid‑Atlantic are old and drafty, relying on outdated “beater heaters” that waste energy. The governor has a chance to change this by moving $88 million from the Strategic Energy Investment Fund into projects that bring modern, efficient heating systems to those who need them most. The plan would introduce cold‑climate heat pumps—devices that can both warm and cool a house—and new window models that plug into standard outlets. Heat pumps are up to four times more efficient than gas furnaces, meaning they use less electricity and cut costs. Studies show that families switching from oil, propane or old electric heaters could save as much as $2, 000 a year. By 2030, the average household could see around $500 in yearly savings after replacing a gas furnace. These reductions also ease pressure on the power grid and could lower overall rates, similar to what happened in Maine.
Beyond money, cleaner air is a major benefit. Gas appliances contribute over 20 % of Maryland’s nitrogen‑oxide pollution, which drives smog and causes health problems. Upgrading low‑income homes with heat pumps could save the state roughly $145 million each year in medical costs, by preventing asthma attacks and reducing prescription expenses. The state already offered a one‑time $80 payment to customers using a large fund, but the new proposal would provide long‑term relief. By funding installations of efficient electric equipment—including heat pumps, induction stoves and better insulation—Maryland could lower bills for families that currently depend on expensive heating fuels. Programs like EmPOWER Maryland already give rebates up to $8, 000 for heat pumps, and pilot projects in other cities show strong results.
