In a surprising turn of events, a radio station in Krakow, Poland, has ditched human journalists for AI-generated presenters. The station, OFF Radio Krakow, announced its new AI hosts this week, aiming to connect with younger listeners. These virtual characters will discuss cultural, artistic, and social topics, including LGBTQ+ issues. Station head, Marcin Pulit, sees it as an experiment to explore AI's role in media.
However, the change hasn't gone unnoticed. Mateusz Demski, a former journalist and film critic at the station, wrote an open letter protesting the move. He fears it sets a dangerous precedent, risking human jobs in the creative industries. The petition he started gained over 15, 000 signatures in a day. Demski highlights that the station is publicly funded, making the move even more shocking.
Pulit maintains that the decision wasn't driven by AI but by low listenership. However, the minister of digital affairs, Krzysztof Gawkowski, believes regulations are needed to control AI usage. The station's first AI-hosted interview featured a virtual presenter impersonating Wisława Szymborska, a deceased Polish poet. The Wisława Szymborska Foundation agreed to the broadcast, believing the poet would have found it amusing.
