AI Shopping Bots May Replace Online Ads
USAMon Mar 23 2026
The internet has long made money by showing ads while people browse.
Now experts think that smart shopping bots could stop this model.
A founder of a new AI company says the web’s business has relied on “distraction” for decades.
When people read a page, an ad can grab part of their attention and earn money for the site.
But large language models (LLMs) and AI agents do not get distracted.
In 2025 the ad market was about $291 billion, mostly run by Google.
Ads helped build a free internet that fed the data used to train LLMs.
Ironically, those same models might cause ads to disappear.
AI services like ChatGPT and Gemini already let users buy things inside a chat.
Last year they added “Instant Checkout” for U. S. customers, so you can order without leaving the conversation.
Soon, many people worldwide will use these tools to find better deals.
Merchants could see more sales, and the platforms might keep a small fee of 5‑10 %.
However, these checkout options are still limited.
Merchants must pass strict checks to be part of the system, creating a closed environment.
It’s like an employee who can only use a company card for three vendors.
A better path, the expert argues, is open‑protocol agents.
These bots can search many shops on their own, like an entrepreneur with a bank account.
Protocols such as x402 from Coinbase or the Machine Payments Protocol from Tempo and Stripe are examples.
The old ad trick that changed the web may be fading by 2026.
Open‑agent commerce could become the new way to buy online.
