AI‑drama boom reshapes China’s TV scene

ChinaSun May 03 2026
In China, the rise of artificial intelligence has turned the long‑time process of making short dramas into a fast, cheap production line. Instead of hiring actors and crews, some companies now generate entire episodes in a few minutes with software that can write scripts, voice lines and create visuals. In March alone, nearly 50, 000 AI‑created microdramas appeared on Douyin, the local TikTok app. That number is close to what the platform had uploaded all year before. These videos are usually one or two minutes long, often told in parts. They range from fantasy battles to peaceful countryside scenes.
Because the technology is still developing, many viewers notice that the content feels generic. Yet some titles have attracted hundreds of millions of views, showing a strong appetite for new media. Experts estimate the AI microdrama market could exceed $3 billion this year, a sizeable share of China’s overall microdrama market, which is valued at more than $14 billion. While the cost savings are clear, critics worry about jobs lost and the quality of storytelling that may be sacrificed for speed.
