In his first international trip as vice president, JD Vance attended the 2025 Artificial Intelligence Action Summit in Paris, France. This summit was a major event, bringing together almost 100 countries and over a thousand representatives from various sectors. The conference aimed to discuss the future of AI and its global impact. The summit's five main themes included public interest in AI, the future of work, innovation and culture, trust in AI, and global AI governance. These themes highlighted the broad scope of AI's influence. Vance focused on the opportunities AI presents, rather than safety concerns. He emphasized that AI could revolutionize many sectors, including economics, job creation, national security, healthcare, and free expression. He pointed out that excessive regulation could stifle the growth of this transformative industry. Vance believes that AI should remain free from ideological bias and not be used for authoritarian censorship.
The vice president also stressed the importance of ensuring that AI enhances productivity and prosperity without replacing human workers. He praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sharing this viewpoint. Vance's trip also included a stop in Germany where he is expected to push NATO members to increase financial support for Ukraine. He is scheduled to meet with key leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The summit's co-hosts, Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron, have both made significant investments in AI. Macron announced private sector investments totaling nearly 109 billion euros the day before the summit began. The participation of Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing indicated China's serious interest in the rise of AI. The recent release of the Chinese AI model DeepSeek, which rivals OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has also caught the attention of the tech industry. Vance's background includes working with tech leaders in Silicon Valley as a junior venture capitalist and serving as an Ohio senator.
