In a recent report, the World Health Organization (WHO) has exposed a jaw-dropping fact: the high-income Asia-Pacific region has the highest rate of physical inactivity, with a staggering 48% of adults not meeting the recommended levels of physical activity in 2022. This amounts to nearly a third of the global adult population, or about 1. 8 billion people, who didn't meet their physical activity targets. The WHO recommends a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per week for adults. The report further reveals that the South-Asia region follows closely with a physical inactivity rate of 45%. This region includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The gender disparity in physical activity levels is also alarming, with a 14 percentage point gap between women and men in the South-Asia region.
Fiona Bull, the head of WHO's physical activity unit, states that the factors determining physical activity levels include personal motivation, time availability, and social and environmental factors. The responsibility to promote physical activity lies with the government, which must invest in the creation and maintenance of safe, clean, well-lit, and accessible public spaces for its local communities to use for exercise. The lack of physical activity puts people at a higher risk for cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, and other non-communicable diseases, which are the leading cause of premature death in today's world. Governments must prioritize and promote the health and well-being of their people by providing accessible and safe public spaces for exercise. Meeting the recommended levels of physical activity is crucial for preventing chronic diseases and promoting positive mental health and well-being.
