AMC Entertainment's stock has been on a wild ride, hitting new lows recently. It's not the only one struggling; the entire market is facing challenges. While the Nasdaq has seen a slight uptick, the Dow Jones and Russell 2000 have both dropped, and AMC is faring worse than most.
The numbers paint a grim picture. AMC's stock is down 19. 3% from its 20-day average and a staggering 37. 2% from its 100-day average. Over the past year, it has plummeted nearly 60%. Despite these gloomy figures, AMC had a stellar holiday season. Over 5. 5 million people flocked to AMC theaters around Christmas and the following days, boosting ticket sales and popcorn revenue.
New releases like "Avatar: Fire and Ash, " "Marty Supreme, " and "Zootopia 2" brought in substantial earnings, each making at least $14 million in the U. S. Internationally, AMC experienced its busiest weekend of the year, with over 1. 7 million moviegoers.
AMC is experimenting with new strategies to draw in customers, such as partnering with Netflix to screen the final season of "Stranger Things. " CEO Adam Aron is optimistic about the diverse range of successful movies, believing it benefits AMC, the movie studios, and, most importantly, the movie enthusiasts.
Financially, AMC has been resilient. They've exceeded revenue expectations for 17 out of the last 18 quarters, with $1. 3 billion in revenue last quarter. However, their earnings per share have only met or fallen short of expectations three times in the past six quarters.
Technically, the stock is in oversold territory, which might indicate a good buying opportunity. But the long-term trend is not encouraging. Investors should proceed with caution and keep an eye out for any signs of improvement.
As of Tuesday, AMC's stock hit an all-time low of $1. 60 and was trading at $1. 62 at the time of this report.
