Another Journalist Killed in Gaza as Fighting Continues
Gaza CityThu Apr 09 2026
Four people died in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza this week, including Muhammad Washah, a journalist working for Al Jazeera. Local health officials say two strikes hit separate areas, one along Gaza City’s main road and another in the central part of the territory. While Israel has not commented on either attack, Al Jazeera reports its team member was killed by a drone strike.
Back in February, Israel claimed Washah was part of Hamas’ armed wing, pointing to photos and a confiscated computer it said showed him handling weapons. Both Hamas and Al Jazeera deny these accusations. The network calls them baseless, while Israel remains silent on why such claims weren’t addressed publicly until now. Other Palestinian civilians were also killed in the same strike, according to Gaza’s civil defense.
Since last October’s fragile ceasefire deal, violence in Gaza has increased again. Both Israel and Hamas blame each other for breaking the truce. In the past months, Israeli fire has led to over 700 Palestinian deaths, while Israel says only four of its soldiers have been killed in the same period.
Journalists keep dying in this conflict. In 2025, another Al Jazeera reporter, Anas Al Sharif, was killed along with four colleagues in an Israeli attack. Israel suggested Al Sharif led a Hamas unit, but the network rejected the claim. Before that, in 2022, veteran journalist Shireen Abu Akleh—a U. S. -Palestinian citizen—was shot dead during a West Bank raid her network was covering. Israel later said she was likely hit by accidental fire from its forces.
The Committee to Protect Journalists records 223 media workers killed in Gaza, Lebanon, and Israel since the war began. Nearly all were Palestinians, and the group says Israel has never punished anyone for these deaths. Israel insists it only targets militants and tries to avoid harming civilians, but warns that people in war zones face risks no matter what.
