Ever thought about how dating apps might affect your love life and health? A recent study found that college students using dating apps are more likely to have multiple partners and have sex under the influence of alcohol. This can put their health at risk, as they're also more likely to test positive for STDs. But it's not clear if dating apps cause risky behavior or if risky behavior leads people to use dating apps.
The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Reproductive Health, showed that dating app users were more than twice as likely to have more than one sexual partner in the past year. They were also almost 1. 5 times more likely to have had their first sexual encounter between the ages of 16 and 19.
Researchers surveyed college students in northern Texas, finding that white students and men were more likely to use dating apps. Interestingly, app users were slightly more likely to use condoms during anal sex, but there was no difference in condom use during oral or vaginal sex.
The study suggests that dating apps might make it easier to find casual partners, leading to risky behaviors. But it could also be that people who already engage in risky behaviors use dating apps to find similar partners.
