In a significant move for space exploration, two NASA astronauts are set to venture outside the International Space Station (ISS) this Thursday. Mike Fincke, a seasoned spacewalker, and Zena Cardman, making her first spacewalk, will take on this mission. Their primary goal is to prepare the 2A power channel for the upcoming installation of new solar arrays.
This is the first spacewalk of NASA's Expedition 74. Scheduled to begin at 8 a. m. EST, it is expected to last until approximately 2:30 p. m. The new solar arrays will boost the ISS's power supply, which is crucial for its safe and controlled de-orbit in the future.
Fincke, wearing a suit with red stripes, will lead the mission as crew member 1, while Cardman, in an unmarked suit, will be crew member 2. Both are part of the seven-member Expedition 74 crew, which started in early December and will conclude this summer.
NASA has also announced a second spacewalk for January 15. Starting at 7:10 a. m. EST, it will last about six and a half hours. The tasks for this spacewalk include replacing a high-definition camera, installing a new navigational aid, and relocating some fluid system components.
Both spacewalks will be live-streamed, offering a glimpse into the intricate work involved in maintaining and upgrading the ISS. These missions mark the 278th and 279th spacewalks in support of the space station's assembly, upgrades, and maintenance.
