Bacterial Juice Helps Fight Gut Inflammation

Scientists mixed 31 friendly bacteria in soy to make a clear liquid called IBM. They tested whether this drink could stop gut trouble in mice that were given a chemical called DSS to mimic colitis.
For one week the mice drank IBM, then another week they received DSS. The researchers checked how sick the animals looked, measured their colon length and looked at tissue under a microscope. They also measured inflammation signals in the blood.
IBM made the mice feel better: their sickness score dropped, their colons stayed longer, and tissue damage was less. Blood tests showed lower levels of two inflammatory molecules, IL‑23 and IL‑17A, and higher amounts of IFN‑β and GM‑CSF, which help fight disease.
To see what was happening inside the gut, scientists examined gene activity in rectal tissue. IBM turned on genes that keep the intestinal lining tight and down‑regulated genes that break down the wall. The study also found changes in the gut clock, suggesting IBM might help reset daily rhythms that influence inflammation.
In lab cells that mimic gut lining, IBM strengthened junction proteins and increased genes that seal the barrier. Meanwhile, 16S DNA analysis of mice gut contents showed more good bacteria like Lactobacillus and Roseburia, and fewer bad ones such as Streptococcus and Staphylococcus.
All these results—from healthier mice to gene changes, better cell walls and a friendlier bacterial community—point to IBM as a safe way to protect against chemically induced colitis.
