Beachwood Place Faces a New Future After Saks Leaves
Beachwood Place Mall, Cleveland, USAFri Mar 20 2026
The loss of its flagship luxury shop has shaken Beachwood Place, a mall that opened in 1978 with a single high‑end anchor: Saks Fifth Avenue. That store had defined the mall’s style, giving shoppers a reason to dress up just for a visit. Now, with only 13 Saks stores left in the country, Northeast Ohio’s sole location is gone, leaving the mall without its most distinctive draw.
The vacancy is more than a space problem. It’s an identity issue, because the mall’s reputation for upscale shopping was built around Saks’ presence. When a big department store like Sears or JCPenney closes, many shoppers have already found new places. But Saks’ clientele chose Beachwood Place specifically for that brand, so replacing it means changing the mall’s core image.
Compounding the challenge is competition. Pinecrest Mall opened nearby, luring away several high‑end brands such as J Crew and Athleta. In a market crowded with similar options, Beachwood Place is struggling to keep shoppers inside.
One proposed solution is to shift from traditional retail to experience‑based attractions. A nearby center in Michigan has succeeded by adding a Legoland indoor park and an aquarium, pulling families in large numbers. These attractions create a “gravity” that pulls people into the mall, where they shop and dine.
Beachwood Place already hosts a Lego Store, the first in the region. Adding a Legoland Discovery Center would build on that brand strength and fit the mall’s upscale vibe better than a discount retailer could. The idea is to offer premium family entertainment that draws visitors and keeps them exploring the rest of the mall.
The debate continues among local leaders, who are looking for ways to keep Beachwood Place relevant and profitable in a changing retail landscape.
