Benin’s Next Leader Steps Forward with Big Win
Cotonou, BeninFri Apr 17 2026
Benin’s top court recently made it official—the country’s new president will be Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni. His victory in last weekend’s election was confirmed with a massive 94. 27% of the vote, leaving his only rival, Paul Hounkpè, far behind at just 5. 73%. The turnout reached 63. 57%, showing that more than half the eligible voters made their voices heard. Now, Hounkpè has a short window—five days—to challenge the results before the court finalizes everything.
Wadagni’s rise didn’t come as a surprise. For years, he worked closely with outgoing President Patrice Talon, who’s stepping down after a decade in power. Many expected Wadagni to win easily, given Talon’s strong influence and past actions. Critics argue Talon’s government made it tough for opponents to run, shaping the election’s outcome before it even happened.
One key figure in the opposition, Renaud Agbodjo, wasn’t even allowed on the ballot. His party, the Democrats, claimed a new law blocked his path by requiring approvals they couldn’t get. They argue the rule was just a way to shut them out, raising questions about fairness in the election process.
